Interestingly, it has a focus ring AND a control ring while the 35mm f/1.8 S only has the focus ring. If they are trying to make the 1.4 cheaper (since it's not an S lens) I am surprised they added the control ring to it as well. Looks like a great lens though!
Wow, interesting. Can't wait to see what the compromises are. I'm a big fan of my Samyang AF 35/1.4 FE, which is a bit soft at the edges when it's wide open and I don't care, but also quite good at the edges when stopped down to f4.0-f5.6 and I do care (e.g. group portraits). I wonder if the Nikon has a similar performance profile. The Sony 35/1.4 GM is much better at the edges than the Samyang at f1.4-f2.0, but my wide-open shots never have important edge detail that's in focus, so this isn't a big draw for me and certainly not worth another $1000. BTW, the Samyang is even cheaper now, at $440. It's heavier than the new Nikon, though, at 645g. The size and weight of the Nikon is almost more compelling than the low price...if the compromises are acceptable.
Thank you for addressing the AF issue and thanks for being such a cool dude!
Cool lens, but I’d only be interested for use on a crop camera. For 30-35mm and lower I prefer an ultrawide zoom on fullframe.
I have a question. When is the best time to use cto gel for your flash in wedding. And do I need it
Base ISO = 800 and 6400
For n log?
This was so helpful! Thank you! I have a 50 mm 1.4, and a 70-200 mm 2.8 so I think I’m set for my next wedding
Great point on dual card record for video! Come on Nikon!
Made by Tamron?
I have the 2.8-4 Nikon F version for my D850 and I love it. Traveling worldwide for my job and this lens never let me down ... If you also still using an F-Mount, I can give you an absolute recommendation
Canon take note.. this is what we need ... from a 50 mil 1.4 owner
Why fire shots at Canon’s 35mm f/1.4 when Sony’s is the same price? I feel like people love shitting on Canon for their prices when their prices are actually in line with other manufacturers’ pro lenses
Just the most recent announcement
Thank you very interesting content I have a canon 7x markii almost 8 years old is awesome for many things, it has all the rings for setting before switching it on Aperture, speed, over exposing I'm until +3:umor under exposing until -3, tilt screen and nd internal filter, I love it also for the real compactness, although has a olter auto focus, I am interesting in seing other 1inch or micro 4/3:or apsc really portable and non attention attractive, that has the same specs of my canon and your 100vi, unluckily the compact sony 1 inch has no nd filter and the leica microv4/3 has no tilt screen dovyou know if the leica has a built in nd? It is kind of game changer to have dome bokeh in day light. A part from this camera what may you suggest me extremely portable with internal nd and tilt screen, I hate Side screens for my way of shooting. How compact is the 100vii to jmyou need a pocket of a jacket like you show in your video or can it fits the pocket of daily jeans like my canon 7x ii? Do you know if the ricoh gr has a nd built inside? For all those camera that has no tilt screen either for very low shots either for hip shots what will you suggest? No idea, phone app connection or an artisans 45° mirror like they did 10 years ago for the sony without selfie screen? Thanks, Max p.s. does it has a microphone input?
This is actually a great move, next step is to open up the mount for sigma! Fingers crossed for that. I really need Nikon to make a modern, fast, 28mm focal length. This is soooo close to what I want!
I have a Tamron 35mm 1.8 adapted in my Z5 and I love it! This lens must be so great!
Tamron SP 35mm ? I eyeeing 35mm focal length and see this old lens from tamron, the f.14 of this version still expensive
Still a bit bumped that it's not a 1.2 but that price is insane
I figured the 1.2 would have come out before this one
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto same. But my back will thank me for a smaller lens😅
I think, I'm gonna sell my 40, 28 (Z) and my sigma 35 1.4 (F) and get exactly the lens I always wanted for that mount!
Hah yah it really hits right in the middle of those Nikon lenses. I think a lot will go for this over the 40 now
This is exactly what I'm gonna do. If I sell my 40/2 and Sigma 35/1.4 I can basically get this lens for a hundred dollars. Damn!
$599 for a 1.4 lens for Nikon Z mount? It sounds a little too good to be true. I just looked up the current price of the 35mm 1.8 z mount lens, which is $696 at the moment. Something doesn't add up. Either the 1.4 lens for $599 is incorrect or the price on the 1.8 lens will come way down.
The 1.8 is an S lens while the 1.4 is not. We'll see what kind of difference that actually makes in real life when they start shipping
Confusing but a welcome release , I have the 40 f2 SE , so I wonder if it's neccsary. But still awesome little lense 1.4 for 599 , if they could make the 50 the same way that would be incredible (typcly 50's are cheaper so 50 1.4 at 399/499 imagine that!) , I would ditch my beloved 50 1.2 for something smaller, love it but it's a fire hydrant. I wonder what would happen/happned to the 35 1.2 , is it cancled ?
I am glad for 1.4, but I'm disappointed it doesn't have a proper aperture ring or other buttons. I wish Sigma would make FF lenses for the Nikon Z system. This 35 1.4 offering from Nikon looks barebones and seemingly lacks effort.
It has to barebones for that price
The 35mm f/1.4 seems to be intended for photographers who think 2/3 stop is going to make or break their images, while setting aside other image quality concerns which might make the 35mm f/1.8 S lens better.
Some people also prefer a less perfect look to their images. So this might also find a home with them
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto True, that's what keeps the vintage M-mount lens market buzzing. It is also a place to learn that f/1.4 is not always better than f/2, where Summicron lenses are often preferred over Summilux.
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto This^. Wedding Photographers will likely love this lens.
Clinical sharpness isn’t what everyone wants. We don’t need to see the crust in people’s eyes
If this renders anything like the 40 2.0 it’s an immediate buy. Best cheap lens I’ve ever used.
Same. I really enjoy the ‘flaws’ to the 40.
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto What flaws? I have one here waiting to be tried out on my Z6 mk3 when it arrives tomorrow. Thanks!
@@nespressoman None. It's the perfect amount of sharpness. Guys shooting brick walls may not like it but people look incredible with it. And it's a plastic mount. People don't usually like that.
I’m quite happy with a plastic mount. Thank you.
This lens looks amazing. I just hope the chromatic aberration and flare isn’t terrible. I don’t care about corner sharpness like a lot of gearheads do, and I’m glad they went this route. The rendering looks like exactly what I like.
if this lens has the same performance as the 1.4 AiS, I wont complain 😊
Still planning on buying the 1.8 S. Nikon did it right with the 1.8 S line up, premium lenses.
Yah that lens is awesome. I love the 50 as well
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto to be honest the 50 is what I'm intending to get, used it before. Spectacular lens. I did have an idea to get all the 1.8 S lenses but that seems extreme..
I have the 50 and 35 1.8 both amazing lenses!
@@lucashillier8618 which one autofocus is fast?
Man this will kill sales of the 35 1.8S (and maybe was already struggling?), and I own that lens. Suppose this not being an S lens still leaves the door open for a 35 1.2S.
Yah I think that’s why they put the 1.4 as a non s in this slot. A lot will probably still wait for the 1.2 and ignore this
The roadmap specifically had a 35mm S lens. Nikon reps talked about the 35mm f/1.2 last year in very real ways. It would be a mistake for Nikon to give up on it, if it can still be made for under $3k USD.
I have the 40mm f2 here but I am seriously thinking about the 35mm Z 1.8 instead.
Did not expect this, and I'm slightly confused. This new 1.4 is significantly less expensive than the 1.8. Is it a non-S lens? Plastic mount? Will the 1.8 price drop? So many questions 😆
Yah the 1.4 isn’t an S lens, so the optical performance of the 1.8 will be better overall theoretically. But we’ll see soon in real life
This 35mm f/1.4 is almost certainly made by Tamron and rebranded as a Nikon lens. Similar to the 28-70mm f/2.8 and 70-180mm f/2.8.
@@UnconventionalReasoning But Tamron doesn't currently make a mirrorless 35mm 1.4
The f1.4 has no lens coatings so the flare and chromatic aberration may be a problem. It also has one STM focus motor and the f1.8 has two motors. In a lens this small that probably won't matter and it kept the price down.
Are you back in shooting mostly Nikon @TaylorJacksonPhoto or considering it? What is currently in your wedding photography bag? ✌
I’m a Nikon and Sony mix right now like I usually am. For hybrid photo/video days I just feel a lot more comfortable on a system that will write my video files to two cards, so I’m usually on Sony for that
I wonder why this is so cheap! Ordered.
It's not an S lens, but I have no problems with that
Long story short it has a lot of compromises, like a huge vignetting (given that it's BY FAR the lightest 35/1.4 ever made), and it also uses a very simple and cheap STM motor for it's auto focus. However even with that in mind I still think it's a bargain. Unless it has some huge issues with auto focus(which I don't believe it will), it looks like the best all-rounder lens for hobbyist that go into full frame.
Also no lens coatings. It will be interesting to see how it handles lens flare.
Manufactured by Tamron.
@@UnconventionalReasoning That's no problem for me.
It’s an interesting lens for sure and it will probably be a solid choice for controlled lighting environments where flare and ghosting aren’t in play. But the loss of ED elements and a reduction in coatings may play havoc with a lot of backlit outdoor shooting situations. Will be interesting to see some in-depth reviews.
Yah I'm very curious about it. Was very surprised to see this before the 35mm f1.2 that's been on the road map for a while now
@@TaylorJacksonPhotoI read somewhere that they have had issues engineering some of the elements in the 1.2. Do you know if that’s actually still planned to launch?
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto Tamron probably manufactured this 35mm f/1.4 independently of Nikon's manufacturing of the 35mm f/1.2.
Get into the monthly while it still exists: www.taylorjacksoncourses.com/members
How do you get the Fujifilm cap?
Camera shop had one left over from the 90s
Brilliant video. Many thx
do you have any str8 from camera photo samples?
This was pre production so I can’t give out raw files sadly
6:00 I guess you think z8 for families and going out is too big? I am thinking on selling x100v and Q3 and buy it. I want one body for daily and for wildlife/landscape
Why shoot in neutral rather than standard
For video it gives you a little more control over colour grading
Does RX have any optical zoom capabilities??
Camera looks great, but very disappointed in Taylor. He's saying Zee, instead of Zed. I'm an American and I come here to hear about the Zed.
Hahah :(
I have my z6iii now and playing with settings - Personally, I like to have the histogram available in all display modes (I seem to recall that I could do this with my z6ii) but now it seems to only be visible TOGETHER with the artificial horizon indicator. I can't find any info in the uhb, have I missed something?. All answers welcome ...
Hi, d19 and d20 lets you customise what is seen in each display. I like having histogram too but wish it had zebra for highlights in still as well as video.
@@kevinhirst1355 Many thanks - I'd actually seen d19/d20, but hadn't noticed the additional submenus. Silly old me!
Nikon z8 raws are file 45-60mb (higher iso, more DR bigger file). I shot high efficiency * and it was around 30mb. The lowest high efficiency dropped it down to 20gb. I did the lowest raw for sport events when spraying and praying. Otherwise i use the High efficiency* star mode. Z6 24mp, my zf is more like 24-30mb. I just keep it at raw for most stuff. I am reviewing if i see any differences with HE and might make the permanence jump
Nikon app also help you auto sync the camera time zone if I a, correctly
Does it automatically do it on connection? My only fear is it changing the time half way through a wedding day haha
The one thing that I MUST change in My Nikon Z cameras is,, "f7 (Z6III,, different f in MENU in diff. Z cameras) RELEASE BUTTON TO USE DIAL" ""TURN IT ON"" then (WHEN YOU TOUCH ANY '"FN"BUTTON,, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HOLD IT DOWN TILL YOU ARE DONE) push the "FN" button, change the settings then touch any button to finish the change!!!!!!!!!!! Please share with all Nikon Z Users !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; the courage to change the things I can; and the wisdom to know the difference." ^ Applies to camera settings 😆
Picking up my z6iii today. Super informative video, wish you would have slowed down a bit and really showed what buttons you were pressing. Will definitely be watching this video a few more times.
You can always change the playback speed of the video on the settings menu. Cheers!!!
Hopefully getting mine this week!
Taylor if you could go to 1.8 for this wedding would you of ?
vau the photos look too goood ...
Better than the Zf?
For weddings? I'd say yes, even if just for the ergonomics, CFE-B card, and optional vertical grip. That said, I have and absolutely love the Zf.
There is no Medium RAW in Z9/Z8 like we have on Z7... unfortunately... Somehow I thought for a moment that they finally added it via firmware... 😅
How does Liam use it then haha
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto Ask him 😅 He is probably talking about RAW new compression, but not Medium RAW like in Z7. 😉
It’s just different language. It’s not called medium raw, it’s 3 different compression options of the raw files. I use the middle one.
HI Taylor, love the content, thank you for all the vids. I'm a London based photographer who shoots maybe 5 weddings and 50 events per year (as well as property photography). I currently have 2 Z6ii's which i really like, but aside from the 14-30 and 70-200 2.8z lenses, i'm still using F mount with the adaptor (24-70 2.8, 85 1.4 and 35 1.4). I'm wondering whether you recommend changing to native lenses, ie the 85 1.2 which i massively desire..over upgrading the bodies right now in my situation? Also, the only snag i have from moving from dslr a couple of years ago is the slight delay when bringing the camera up to the eye with mirrorless...is it faster on the z6iii vs z6ii?
